Places of Tourist Importance at Kottayam
Kottayam has many places of tourist importance. It reflects the traditional heritage of the past and the glittering glory of the modern era in equal significance. Kumarakom – The Paradise of Tourists
Kumarakom on the banks of Vembanadu Lake is one of the most beautiful land strips in the tourist map of Kerala. The coconut palms and the green fields enrich the beauty of Kumarakom. It is also famous for house boats or ‘Kettu Vallams’ which attract tourists from abroad and inland. The Kumarakom bird sanctuary is a fabulous attraction for the tourists.
The famous mangrove forest Kandalkadu at Kumarakom is very rich in wild life and the boating at Kumarakom is a unique experience. Speedboats are also available. A snake boat race is held Onam Festival. Various types of boats participate in the race.
Peerumedu
Peerumedu is hill station in Kerala, located on way to Thekkady, and about 85 Km east to Kottayam. This lovely high range, which is 1066 meters above the sea level, has many tea and coffee plantations along with pepper, cardamom, rubber and eucalyptus plantations. Peerumedu is enveloped with a fragrance that is heady and delightfully intoxicating. There are vast grass lands and plantation in and around the place.
Thekkady
The Periyar wild life sanctuary of Thekkady is the domain of Elephants, Tigers and Bisons. Watching elephants, deer, and wild pig while on a cruise through the Periyar Lake is a wonderful experience.
Pathiramanal
Pathiramanal (midnight sands) is a heavenly and lonely island situated in Vembanad lake. Pathiramanal is the main tourist sport in Muhamma. A trip here would be your chance to observe several exotic species of birds that fly in from far and wide.
